Expanding neurology at the Woolcock

Wednesday, January 15, 2025

The Neurology capabilities at the Woolcock are set to be expanded in coming months with Dr Grace Garden joining the team in the Clinic.

Dr Garden is a neurologist furthering her sleep training in sleep medicine within the Woolcock’s Sleep and Circadian Research group. Soon, she will join Woolcock clinician-researcher Dr Elie Matar as one of the few clinicians in Australia who are dual trained in Neurology and Sleep Medicine.

“I’m looking forward to joining the Woolcock Clinic. Its supportive multidisciplinary team provides access to experts in the field. The Woolcock is also an incredible research institute which provides opportunities to link patients into research and contribute to advancements in sleep medicine.”

TRAINING AT THE WOOLCOCK

"My interest in neurology began during my time as an occupational therapist, when I predominantly treated patients with neurodegenerative disorders and stroke. This experience sparked a desire to better understand the conditions, and it was this curiosity that led me to study medicine. Then, during my later training, the growing research on sleep and its connection to cognition led me to pursue additional training in sleep medicine."

Dr Garden obtained her medical degree at the Australian National University and completed her internship, residency, and basic physician training in Canberra. She moved to NSW to complete her advanced training in neurology and commence training in sleep medicine at the Woolcock.

"The beauty of coming to somewhere like the Woolcock during your fellowship training is that, within the Sleep and Circadian Research Group, you’re involved in multiple projects and supported to pursue research in any area you're interested in."

LINKING RESEARCH TO TREATMENT

"You also gain exposure to a broad range of research, which gives you a deeper understanding of the work being done and how it builds upon existing knowledge. This broad perspective not only informs your research but also enhances your clinical practice."

Dr Garden will see patients in the Woolcock Clinic one day a week alongside her continued sleep training.
