The Woolcock Institute of Medical Research has announced the appointment of its new Executive Director.

Immunologist Professor Paul Foster will take up the role in August, following the retirement of widely respected asthma researcher Professor Emerita Carol Armour AM, who has been the Woolcock’s Executive Director for the past 12 years.

Professor Foster is a distinguished scientist with 288 peer-reviewed publications and an H index of 97. He has graduated 33 PhD students.

Like Professor Armour, his research also focuses on asthma, including the mechanisms of the disease process. He has been inducted into the Asthma Foundation Hall of Fame and continues to receive NHMRC and ARC funds to support his work.

Professor Foster has been at the Hunter Medical Research Institute at the University of Newcastle since 2003. As part of his appointment at the Woolcock, he will join Macquarie Medical School.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Medicine and Health, Professor Patrick McNeil, welcomed the new appointment.

“We have been very lucky to have worked so closely with Professor Armour as part of the Woolcock’s primary affiliation with Macquarie University, and we wish her well in her retirement,” Professor McNeil says.

“Professor Foster is a worthy successor in the role, and we look forward to him commencing at the Woolcock, and as part of the Macquarie Medical School’s research family.”

Work is complete on the Woolcock’s new premises at 2 Innovation Road, and the team is set to move in on 2 April.
