Our ENT surgeon, Associate Professor Stuart MacKay wins grant to help clear the airways

Up to a quarter of Illawarra men suffer from mild to severe sleep apnoea, and nine per cent of women. A new collaboration between our Woolcock Clinic ENT surgeon, Associate Professor Stuart MacKay and leading scientist Professor Gordon Wallace (in the picture) may help them rest easy by working towards solving sleep apnea.

Stuart MacKay received a prestigious research grant ‘Garnett Passe and Rodney Williams Memorial Foundation Conjoint Grant’ worth $375,000 over a three year period to collaborate with Professor Gordon Wallace.

They are to create an artificial model of the airway during sleep apnea and hopefully develop new therapies that could help people who stop breathing in their sleep, or drop oxygen levels in their sleep.
